West Windsor, N.J. - Drexel coxswain Steve Matyas led a four to victory at the 2009 Under 23 World Championships Trials on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. Matyas and his boat earned the right to represent the United States at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships July 23-26 in Racice, Czech Republic.

In the men’s four with coxswain, Matyas coxed the Cayuga Lake Training Center (N.Y.) crew of Michael Rossidis, Baustian Drew, Evan Cassidy and Christopher Frendl to a victory over Penn A.C. Cayuga Lake gained a five-second lead by the 1,000-meter mark and held it through the second half of the course to cross first in a 6:50.193. Matyas, a member of the 2007 junior team, competed in the event at the 2007 FISA World Rowing Junior Championships.

Matyas will enter his junior season starting in the fall of 2009. He has already led a Drexel boat to the grand finals at the IRA Championships in his career as a Dragon.
