Drexel Records Continue to Fall at CAA Swimming & Diving Championships

Fairfax, Va. - Drexel's men's and women's swimming & diving teams continue their assualt on the school's record books on the third day of competition at the 2010 CAA Swimming & Diving Championships. On the women's side, the 200 medley relay and 100 back records fell while the men's 100 back event now has a new first and second place on the all-time fastest times list. Doga Celik highlighted Friday's action with a second-place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:38.84 to clinch All-CAA honors in the event.
After finishing second in the prelims, Celik won a hard-fought battle for second place in the finals. Mason's Eric Knight ran away with the event as the senior recorded a time of 1:35.85 but Celik, a freshman, held off Stephen Fay of William & Mary to take second place by 0.03 seconds.
T.J. Southmayd continued his impressive showing at the Championships as he added to his previous victory in the 200 IM by taking fifth in the 100 back with a school-record time of 50.38. Celik qualified for the consolation finals in the event and placed fifth by posting the second-best time in school history with a 51.34. The pair joined Adrian Sabovici and Jesse McGrath in the 800 free relay where the foursome took fifth with a time of 6:50.58.
The men's side had three other swimmers reach the championship finals on Friday. In the 100 fly, both Mert Karsiyakalilar and Armagan Yavuz booked spots in the finals with Karsiyakalilar eventually claiming fifth with a time of 49.48 and Yavuz taking seventh at 50.30. Sherif Madkour also represented Drexel in a championship final as he earned entry in the 100 breast. He eventually took eighth place with a time of 57.36.
The rewriting of the women's record book continued as Maria Coman, Malin Wiberg, Lauren Faykes and Morgan Cichewicz established a new school record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:48.40. Coman added a new school record in the 100 back in the consolation finals. The junior shaved seven tenths off of her previous best time to register a 57.67 and take 13th overall in the event. Jessica Csakai hoisted her name on the Drexel record book with a time of 1:52.99 in the opening leg of the 800 free relay. It marked the first time in Csakai's career she broke 1:54.00 in the 200 free.
