Drexel Field Hockey Head Coach Denise Zelenak was chosen as Head Coach of the New Jersey Junior High Performance Center team that will compete with the three other regional teams for the Junior Women's National Championship in June. The team will feature the best under-21 players in the area who are part of the Futures Elite program. The Junior Women's National Championship is a developmental program for the U.S. National Field Hockey Team. Zelenak will be joined by Drexel Associate Head Coach Nicky Hitchens who will serve as the New Jersey Junior High Performance Center team's site administrator.
Zelenak's appointment as Head Coach of the New Jersey Junior High Performance Center team is just one of many high-profile posts she has been selected for in her coaching career. Zelenak served as co-head coach for the United States Men's East Coast Junior Team for three years before serving as head coach last year leading the team to gold in 2006, 2008 and 2009 at the U.S. training center in Chula Vista, Calif.
Last season, Zelenak was chosen as the Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year after leading Drexel to a 19-4 record, a Colonial Athletic Association regular season championship and the program's first ever berth in an NCAA Tournament. The Dragons defeated No. 5 UConn in the first round of the NCAA's before falling to No. 1 Maryland in the Elite Eight.
For those wishing to try-out for the New Jersey Junior High Performance Center team, a trial will be held Sunday, April 18, from 11am-3pm at Drexel University. Registration is available under membership log-in at www.usafieldhockey.com.
