Harrisonburg, Va. - Drexel will begin defense of its CAA Tournament title on Friday at 2:30 against the Delaware Blue Hens. The teams will meet for the third time this season as the second of four quarterfinal games on Friday at the JMU Convocation center. Drexel (17-12, 11-7), the No. 4 seed in the tournament, beat Delaware in the team's two previous meetings this season, both of which went into overtime. The fifth-seeded Blue Hens (20-10, 11-7) advanced after an opening round victory over George Mason on Thursday.
Drexel has won six straight against their regional rival Delaware dating back to Jan. 10, 2008. The Dragons' victories this season came in closely contested games. Drexel won 70-67 in double overtime in Newark on Jan. 17. A Jennifer Stjarnstrom put-back layup with 23 seconds left in double overtime put the Dragons on top and a pair of Marisa Crane free-throws with five seconds to play iced the win for Drexel. On Jan. 31 in Philadelphia, Crane won it for Drexel on a last-second jumper in the lane to give her team the 60-58 win in overtime in front of the first ever sell-out crowd to watch a women's game at the DAC.
Led by 2010 CAA Player and Rookie of the Year Elena Delle Donne, the Blue Hens dispatched 12th-seeded George Mason 58-41 in the opening round of play on Thursday. Delle Donne got off to a slow start but finished with a team-leading 16 points and five rebounds. The Blue Hens led comfortably in the second half, allowing Head Coach Tina Martin to rest her key players. Eleven players saw time for Delaware in the win.
The Dragons are entering the CAA Tournament following a loss in the regular-season finale for the first time since 2001-02. Drexel is looking to snap a four-game losing skid and to advance for the first time as a No. 4 seed. First Team All-CAA forward Gabriela Marginean could move into second place all-time in rebounding at Drexel with six more rebounds. She has grabbed 933 caroms thus far in her career.
Fans can listen to the game live on WKDU 91.7 FM with Pat Delsi and Mike Mazzeo calling the action. Live stats and streaming video are also available on www.caasports.com.
