Hot Springs, Va. - Freshman Ben Feld posted Drexel's top score in the first round of the 2010 Colonial Athletic Associaiton Golf Championships at The Homestead in Hot Springs, Va. Feld completed his round with a 74 while classmate James Braunsberg fired a 77. Andrew Lawson and Kyle Davis totaled 78 and 80, respectively, while Michael Serensits shot an 86. As a team, Drexel recorded a 309 for the first of the three-round tournament.
The 54-hole tournament will conclude on Sunday afternoon with the winner earning an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship. Head Coach Mike Dynda will be sending Kyle Davis, Ben Feld, James Braunsberg, Andrew Lawson and Mike Serensits to represent the Dragons in the 11-team tournament at the par 70, 6,679-yard Cascades Golf Course.
Feld had an unusual round as he had a string of 13 consecutive holes without recording a par. The freshman recorded five of the Dragons' six birdies on the day but nine bogeys kept him out of the top 10 individual leaderboard. He shot a 37 on both the front and the back to post his 74. Braunsberg rebounded from a tough early start in his first CAA Championships appearance. After bogeying four of the first five holes, Braunsberg battled to shoot just three-over the rest of the way, including a 37 on the back nine to finish with a 77.
Lawson had a steady round through 15 holes as he posted just four bogeys as he headed to the par 5, 16th hole at four-over. Lawson had a tough time the rest of the way as he sandwiched a par on 17 with double bogeys on 16 and 18 to climb to eight-over par with a 78. Davis also found late trouble as he was four-over with just five holes to play but ended with a string of double bogey-par-bogey-double bogey-bogey to finish with an 80. He did record Drexel's other birdie as he carded a three on the 289-yard third hole. Serensits recorded bogeys on each of the first nine holes before putting together a pair of pars to start the back nine. He finished with a seven-over 42 on the back to total 86 on the day.
