Hot Springs, Va. - Drexel's Andrew Lawson put forth one of the top rounds in his young collegiate career as the sophomore shot a 71 in the second round of the 2010 CAA Championships that helped move the Dragons from ninth to a tie from seventh through two rounds. The final round will come tomorrow with the Dragons within 10 strokes of a top five finish. The Dragons shaved seven strokes off of their first round score of 309.
Lawson's big round moved him to a tie for 13th individually. After a first round of 78, Lawson was having a solid round with just two bogeys in his first four holes but went on a streak of four straight pars before closing the front with a birdie to shoot one-over to post a 36 at the turn. Once again the first four holes, resulted in a pair of bogeys and once again, Lawson rallied with three birdies over the next four holes to move to even before ending his round with a bogey to card his 71.
Drexel's first round leader, Ben Feld, ran into trouble throughout his second round and finished with an 88. But the other Dragons stepped up as Kyle Davis shaved four strokes off his first round score to post a 78 but the biggest improvement came from sophomore Michael Serensits. After a tough 86 on the first day, Serensits settled in the second, as he made the turn with a 37 that included his first birdie of the tournament on the second hole. His back nine did not go as smoothly. Despite three bogeys and a double bogey over the first six holes on the back, Serensits rallied to shoot even par the rest of the way, including a bird on the par 5, 16th hole. James Braunsberg continued his solid play with a 78 as he followed his first round of 77.
