Philadelphia - Drexel Athletics bestowed its highest honor to a women's basketball player who helped lead the program to new heights during the past four years. Gabriela Marginean's No. 44 jersey will forever adorn the rafters above the court where she plied her trade better than any player in Drexel Women's Basketball history. Marginean was the top honoree at Drexel Athletics' Basketball Awards Banquet were both men's and women's teams were recognized for their success during the 2009-2010 season.
Marginean, who finished her career as Drexel's all-time leading scorer and became the first women's player from the school to be drafted by the WNBA, also received recognition from Interim President C.R. "Chuck" Pennoni, who presented her with the President's Achievement Award. Marginean was also named the women's basketball team's MVP for the fourth straight season.
Sophomore guard Marisa Crane was honored with the Steve Sher Academic Award. The CAA All-Academic First Team selection was among the nation's leaders in assist-to-turnover ratio this season. Kamile Nacickaite earned the Most Improved Player Award after doubling her career scoring and rebounding numbers and proving to be one of the top three-point shooters in the CAA this season.
Tyler Hale earned the Spirit/Leadership award. The sophomore forward, who made 28 starts this season, was one of the team's vocal leaders on the floor. Rookie Renee Johnson-Allen received the Defensive Award after her first season with the team. While she was limited to just 10 games due to a season-ending injury, Johnson-Allen showed coaches and fans that she is one of the teams most tenacious defenders when she's healthy. Fellow rookie Fiona Flanagan was given the Lil Haas Coaches Award. Although Flanagan did not see action this season while red shirting, she was still an important contributor in practice and in the locker room for the Dragons and her future with the team looks to be a bright one.
The Dragons went 17-14 on the season and earned their first WNIT berth. Among Drexel's highlights this season were the program's first win over a nationally ranked team, No. 25 James Madison, and an overtime victory against Delaware in front of the first capacity crowd to wittness a women's game at the DAC. Head Coach Denise Dillon was also recognized for earning her 100th career win, all of which came at Drexel.
