Philadelphia - Former point guard and recent Drexel graduate Andrea Peterson has been named assistant women's basketball coach at Stetson University in Deland, Fla. Peterson, who last played for Drexel in 2009, when she helped guide the team to its first ever CAA Championship and NCAA Tournament berth. She joins the staff of Head Coach Lynn Bria in hopes of helping the Hatters improve on last season's 6-24 record.
Peterson, who transferred to Drexel from St. John's in 2005, holds an undergraduate and master's degree from Drexel. She worked as a graduate assistant in Drexel's ACHIEVE Center this past season and helped to coordinate the team's community outreach efforts.
During her time at Drexel Peterson was known as an excellent leader and an active community advocate. She was recognized for her leadership on the court and in the community in 2009 when the CAA honored her with its prestigeous Dean Ehlers Leadership award. Peterson was also a member of the CAA All-Academic Team as a senior and she earned a place on the All-Tournament Team after guiding the Dragons to a 64-58 win over James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va. in the CAA Championship Game.
Peterson recovered from a knee injury that ended what would have been her senior season in 2007-08. As a senior in 2008-09 she averaged 5.7 points and 3.1 assists per game as a senior and was among the top 5 in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio.
While this is Petersons first Div. I coaching position, she is a veteran of youth basketball and AAU coaching in the Philadelphia area. Most recently, she served as the coach of the 15-U Philadelphia Belles travel team.
