Philadelphia – Head Coach Denise Dillon announced that UMass junior Nicole Jones will transfer to Drexel to join the Dragons for the 2011-12 season. Jones, a 6-foot-2 forward from Rochester, N.Y., led the Minutemen with 41 blocks last season. She will sit out this coming season due to NCAA transfer regulations and will be eligible to play for the Dragons in 2011 and will have two years of eligibility at Drexel.
“Nicole is a talented player whose experience playing at the college level will allow her to help us right away,” said Drexel Head Coach Denise Dillon. “She brings a great deal of athleticism to the forward position and has proven to be an effective post defender and rebounder, as well as being able to put the ball in the basket.”
Jones played in all 30 games for UMass last season and made 17 starts. She the fourth leading scorer (7.7 ppg) and rebounder (4.0 rpg) on a team that went 11-19 on the season under recently-deposed Head Coach Marnie Dacko.
As a sophomore for the Minutemen last year, Jones tied the program's single-game record when she swatted eight shots against Duquesne on Jan. 20. She also posted two 22-point games, including a 22-point, 12-rebound double-double against Villanova on Nov. 22.
Jones played her high school ball at Nazareth Academy where she was a three-time all-state selection while helping her team to a section championship and an appearance in the state finals. She was also an all-state volleyball player and was named league Player of the Year as a senior.
