Philadelphia - Drexel men's and women's basketball players took time from their summer schedules to pay a visit to The Timothy School in Berwyn, Pa. on Friday, July 30. The Timothy School is dedicated to educating children with Autism. For the third year in a row, students welcomed the Dragons to school as part of Sibling Day for a basketball clinic and a scrimmage against the school's team, "The Tornadoes."
The Sibling Day event at Timothy School, is a day on which all the students diagnosed autism spectrum disorders invited their siblings for a day of bonding and fun. Drexel women's players Tyler Hale, Tory Thierolf and Jackie Schluth and men's players Gerald Colds, Frantz Massenat, Dartaye Ruffin and Daryl McCoy joined Kathy O'Brien and Dr. Rebecca Weidensaul, from Drexel's ACHIEVE Center for a day of hoops, friends and fun.
The Dragon's day began with a tour of the school and an orientation about the schools mission and goals. Then, the Timothy students and their brothers and sisters were broken into four rotating groups for various activities, including the basketball clinic. Afterward, the entire school community gathered in the gymnasium for the Dragon vs. Tornadoes game. Everyone played hard, as the fans cheered with their Commemorative Sibling Day Pennants!
Missy Mundy, Athletics Director for The Timothy School, presented the Drexel Athletic Department with a special framed piece of art created by the students in appreciation of all the time, effort, and dedication throughout the years.
"The Dragons understand the value of giving back to the community that supports them in their pursuits”, said Kathy O'Brien, Assistant Director of Academic Services.
