
VCU Defeats Drexel, 62-60, in CAA Quarterfinals on a Buzzer Beater

Richmond, Va. – VCU's Jamie Skeen's basket at the buzzer gave the Rams a 62-60 victory against Drexel in the CAA Quarterfinals at the Richmond Coliseum. VCU advances to the semifinals to face George Mason on Sunday.
The Dragons (21-10) trailed by as many as seven points in the second half, but chipped away down the stretch. Chris Fouch made a three-pointer with 28 seconds to make it a one-point game before VCU's (22-10) Joey Rodriguez sank a pair of free throws. The next time down court, Fouch buried another three-pointer to tie the game with just 18 seconds to play.
Fouch finished the game with 20 points and seven rebounds. Samme Givens added 13 points and eight rebounds before fouling out. The Dragons played with out all three of their regular big men in the last two minutes as Givens, Dartaye Ruffin and Daryl McCoy all fouled out. Drexel shot 44 percent in the game but committed 16 turnovers.
The Rams made 19 of 25 free throws in the second half and went to the line 36 times in the game, converting 25 of their attempts. Skeen led the Rams with 24 points, while Bradford Burgess added 15.
Drexel managed to stay close in the first half despite foul trouble on many key players. McCoy and Ruffin were each whistled for three fouls in the first half, and Samme Givens and Frantz Massenat were each called for two. Drexel clamped down on the defensive end and held the Rams without a point for the final 2:50 of the half and the teams went to the half tied 23-23. Both teams shot less than 40 percent in the first half and committed nine turnovers.
