Drexel Unveils Kline and Specter Squash Courts

PHILADELPHIA - In front of an overflowing crowd of university dignitaries and distinguished guests, Drexel University President John A. Fry, Director of Athletics Dr. Eric Zillmer, Drexel Squash Head Coach John White and the Drexel Athletics Department officially opened the Kline & Specter Squash Center on Monday evening. The new facilities are located in John A. Daskalakis Athletic Center, and will be home to the Drexel men's and women's squash programs.
The courts were made possible by the generosity of Tom Kline and Shanin Specter, partners in Kline & Specter, P.C. law firm in Philadelphia. The faciltiy features seven courts — five competitive and two recreational — as well as a team room and comfortable seating areas for spectators.
Drexel will play its first matches in the new facility on February 2, when both the men's and women's teams host Haverford. The Dragons, who are coached by former world-No. 1 player John White, have already played a full fall season, with both teams showing significant improvement over the course of the schedule. The men come into the spring ranked No. 29 in the nation, while the women are No. 35 after just a few short months as a Division I program.
There will be three home dates for the Dragons at the new Kline & Specter Squash Center. The first, on February 2, will be a rematch with a Haverford, which hosted Drexel for the Dragons' first ever Division I matches in the fall. The men won that inaugural contest, 9-0, while the women fell 6-3. Both teams will also play host to Brown on Feb. 4, with the men hosting Swarthmore to close the home schedule on Feb. 8.
The teams consist largely of former Drexel club players. Many are international student-athletes, but there are also several from the local area, representing one of the biggest hotbeds of squash in the United States.
In addition to housing the Drexel squash program, the Kline & Specter Squash Center promises to become one of the better known venues in the international squash world over the next few years. Drexel, which hosted the 2011 Delaware Investments U.S. Squash Open last fall, will play host to the country's premier squash event once again in 2012. Although championship play will once again take place in the main arena at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, the Kline & Specter Squash Center will be used for practice and qualifying matches, thus seeing the top players from around the world spending time in its courts.
The Dragons' first matches at their new home are scheduled to get underway at 6:30 p.m. on February 2.
