1/24/2012 8:43:00 PM | Wrestling
Philadelphia – Drexel jumped out to a quick start but four straight wins for Army and two pins ended the Dragons chances for victory at the DAC. The Black Knights downed the Dragons 26-12 as Shane Fenningham, Brandon Palik, Kyle Frey and Frank Cimato all picked up wins in the losing effort. Drexel wrestling used the halftime break to honor all veterans and current military personnel for their service to the United States of America.
Despite Fenningham's first match 5-3 decision over Army's Ryan Bilyeu at 149 pounds and Cimato's final bout victory, 13-7, over Casey Smith at 141 pounds, Drexel was unable to stop the Black Knight's momentum as they peeled off four straight wins at 157, 165, 174 and 184 pounds. At the end of its run, Army led Drexel 14-3. Fenningham moved to 6-14 overall, 3-8 in duals while Cimato now holds a 14-10 record, 8-4 in dual meets.
The Dragons kept grinding, however, and picked up two big wins at 197 pounds and heavy weight as Palik and Frey got Drexel back in the dual closing the gap to just five points at 14-9. With three matchups left to go the Dragons were knocking on the door. Army was able to respond with back-to-back pins at 125 pounds and 133 pounds as it picked up 12 more team points to put the dual out of reach.
Palik set a new season win mark with his 5-3 victory over Derek Stanley as he now sits 20-11 overall. Palik also continues to lead the Dragons in wins. Frey's 10-4 decision over Daniel Mills moved the senior into second on the team with 19 wins as well as second with a .791 win percentage. Frey also sits atop the squad with an 11-1 dual meet mark.
Drexel is off for 11 days until the Dragons travel to Providence, R.I. to take on non-conference opponent Brown at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 4 followed by a quick trip to Boston, Mass. to take on CAA foe Boston University at 3:00 p.m.
