PHILADELPHIA – Head Coach Doug Hess and the Drexel University men's soccer team announced today that they have added three student-athletes to their roster for the fall 2012 season. Jameson Detweiler and Fabio Machado have signed National Letters of Intent to play for Drexel, while Jared Girard is a mid-year transfer from Campbell to join the Dragons for his junior season.
“We are thrilled about this group of young men,” Hess remarked. “We were able to address several areas of need in our team with these signings and they bring a wealth of experiences to our team. With that, these are all student-athletes of top-notch character. I look forward to their addition to our team this coming fall and working them into the group.”
Fabio Machado will be a sophomore when he joins the Dragons this fall after completing a stellar season at Burlington County College in New Jersey. There, he was named a 2011 NSCAA/Continental Tire Men's Junior College Division I All-American after leading his team to a regional championship. Machado notched 21 goals and nine assists in 15 games with Burlington, earning Offensive Player of the Game recognition when the team clinched its regional title. Burlington finished its season ranked 15th in the nation. Machado also played four years of varsity soccer at Leominster H.S. in his hometown of Leominster, Mass., where he was named an All-State performer as a junior and senior and All-New England standout as a senior. He finished his high school career with 79 goals and 111 total points, both school records.
Machado has played with the New England Revolution USSF Developmental Academy teams from 2008-11. He scored 23 goals during his three years with the Revolution, including a year on the U16 team and two on the U18 squad. His last season saw Machado lead the team with 14 goals in 2011.
“Plain and simple, Fabio is a goal-scorer,” explained Hess. “We have watched him play on several occasions and he impressed us each time we saw him. He has an uncanny knack; an un-coachable quality that gets him in the right spot at the right time. Fabio can score goals in a variety of ways and we are eager to get him into the mix.”
Jameson Detweiler will enroll as a freshman at Drexel this fall. A native of Walkersville, Md., Detweiler played four years of varsity soccer at Walkersville High, starting every game all four years. An Honorable Mention All-State honoree as a junior in 2010, Detweiler was named to the Frederick News Post all-area soccer teams in each of his four seasons. Detweiler was also recognized by his league, the MVAL, as a First Team All-League performer his junior and senior seasons, following a Second Team recognition his freshman and sophomore campaigns.
Detweiler spent three years with the Soccer Association of Columbia club team. With them, Detweiler helped the team to a State Cup Championship and Region I finals appearance in 2011.
“Jameson is a strong central defender that also possesses the ability to play left back,” said Hess. “He has a solid left foot, which is much needed within our team. Jameson was a picture of consistency every time we saw him play. We are excited about his addition and know that he is only going to get better over time.”
Jared Girard has elected to continue his collegiate career at Drexel after spending his first two seasons at Campbell University in North Carolina. The midfielder has already begun classes and training with the team this winter term. A native of Cary, N.C., Girard played the second-most minutes of any freshman for the Camels in 2010, starting 14 matches and playing in 18 of 19 games. Last year, Girard fought through a mid-season injury, playing in 17 contests with nine starts. He scored a goal in each of his two seasons at Campbell. Girard's Campbell career followed a successful four years of varsity soccer at Green Hope High in Cary, where he was an All-State and Tri-9 Conference Player of the Year award winner as a senior in 2009. He scored 14 goals and added seven assists that season, leading the team to a 2009 State 4-A runner-up finish.
Girard spent four years with the CASL Chelsea FC USSF Developmental Academy in Raleigh, N.C. A former captain of the U18 and U16 Academy teams, he helped them advance to the Academy Finals week in each of his seasons with the club and a finish as high as four in the country in the 2009-10 season.
“Jared is a soccer-junky and adds another piece to our mid-field,” Hess commented. “He is a competitive and combative player that possesses strong leadership qualities. Jared is a team-first player and his two years of Division I college soccer experience will allow him to blend in with our team right away.”
“We are thrilled about this group of young men,” Hess remarked. “We were able to address several areas of need in our team with these signings and they bring a wealth of experiences to our team.
