PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel men's soccer team will be making its second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance, and will be doing so against an old familiar foe. The Dragons, who won their first-ever Colonial Athletic Association Tournament championship on Saturday, will be heading to Old Dominion for a first-round game on Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m.
The Dragons and Monarchs were conference mates from 2002 through last season, after which Old Dominion left the CAA for Conference-USA. The Monarchs went 10-5-1 in their first year in their new conference, including a 7-2-0 mark in Conference-USA play, and earned an at-large bid into this year's NCAA Tournament field.
Drexel and Old Dominion opened each other's CAA seasons last year, the last time these two teams met. The Dragons scored a 4-1 victory over then-No. 11 Old Dominion that served notice to the rest of the league as Drexel embarked on its first of two-straight CAA regular season championship seasons. Michele Pataia scored two goals in that game, and Mark Donohue added a score. Nathan Page and Matheus Goncalves each registered assists. Old Dominion's goal was scored in the 81st minute, making the score 4-1, by Tim Hopkinson. Hopkinson leads this year's Monarchs squad with 10 goals and 24 total points.
The Dragons and Monarchs will face off at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, with the winner to take on No. 6 Georgetown on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
