Men's Soccer Gets First Win of 2013, 2-0 Over Stony Brook
9/8/2013 5:31:00 PM | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel men's soccer team got its first win of the season on Sunday afternoon as it shut out Stony Brook in the finale of the University City Classic, 2-0. Drexel got a shutout performance by freshman goalkeeper Tyler Afflerbach in his first-career start, while Maty Brennan notched his first goal as a Dragon to give Drexel its game-winner. Nathan Page added a score late to ice the game away, his first goal of the season.
Two days after ceding an early goal that helped Sacred Heart control tempo in the Dragons' 2-1 loss, Drexel was the team getting the early goal. With the wind at their back, the Dragons brought the ball upfield and Jared Girard found Maty Brennan along the left side. From about 30 yards, Brennan drove a shot towards the back post, knocking it off the crossbar, off the post and in to put Drexel up 1-0. The goal came just 7:19 into the contest.
That would stand up as the game's only goal for nearly the entire way. Stony Brook had trouble getting through the front lines of Drexel's defense in a physical game that saw 26 total fouls and five yellow cards altogether. Afflerbach was called upon to make four saves, including a big one in the 67th minute off a quick look from the Seawolves' Keith McKenna.
With Stony Brook pressing for an equalizer and the clock winding down, Mark Donohue chased a ball that had been fed back deep into Stony Brook territory. Seawolves goalkeeper Jason Orban charged in to poke the ball away from Donohue, but the senior forward's aggressive move was able to lure Orban out of position. The goalkeeper's rushed clear attempt went straight to Drexel's Nathan Page, who fired into an open net from 25 yards to secure the game in the 90th minute.
For Page, it was the first goal of the season. He led the team last season in goals and points, and now is tied with Mike Jeremenko and Tony Washofsky for 27th place all-time in points in Drexel men's soccer history with 42 career points.
Drexel will be back in action on Thursday evening when it visits Lehigh at 7:00 p.m. The game is the final road contest of the month of September for the Dragons, who will return home for three games beginning September 17 against La Salle to close out the month.
