Dragon Dispatches: The Arrival in England
6/16/2014 9:57:00 AM | Women's Rowing
By: Laura White, Senior Women's Administrator
Drexel's Women's Crew team -- which includes the varsity eight, the second varsity eight, the pair, coach Paul Savell, coach Denise Julian and senior women's administrator Laura White -- landed safely on Sunday in London, England at Heathrow Airport with only a two and a half hour delay.
The varsity eight boat includes Kerry Walsh, Olivia Babiec, Bridget Pfeifer, Sierra Baca, Marina Forster, Jayme Batcher, Elizabeth Daugherty, Amanda Kleuser and Elise Levito. The second varsity eight boat is made up by Catherine Hamilton, Kendall Wenzke, Elizabeth Campanella, Tori King, Emily Gartland, Amanda O'Malley, Samantha Cowan, Taylor Brady and Julie McGlynn. Stephanie Thomas and Barbara McKenna comprise the pair.
Slightly tired but so excited we got on our bus with our 14 oars that made the trip with us and headed to Henley. For most of us, it was our first time to Henley, and as we drove up, many ahhhs went up from the team! As we drove over the River Thames into Henley, we knew we were in a truly special place.
Henley is a quaint and beautiful little town that we will call home for the next six days! Home is the right word, because next we found the four homes that we will live in. The families are lovely people, and they have made us feel so welcomed.
We quickly changed and walked down to the river to find our boats. We located the boats at the Upper Thames Rowing Club. The team masterfully put the boats together and soon were testing the river! There was time for a short warm up, which included getting used to the river and boats. Then it was time for dinner. We had a delicious dinner at the home of Julie and Miles. Everyone was full, happy but fading fast. It had been a long but exhilarating 36 hours.
Time for bed and a good rest because tomorrow is another exciting day!!!
