Dragon Dispatches: Last Day of Practice
6/19/2014 11:12:00 AM | Women's Rowing
By: Elizabeth Daugherty, elite eight
Today began with a well-received additional hour of sleep before our 8:00 a.m. practice. We moved our boats up the course to store them with all of the other teams and it was great to be more imbedded with the competition.
With practice complete at 10:00 a.m. we had plenty of time to stroll the small town before our 2:00 p.m. second practice.
Today, the town had an outdoor market in the central square. The team bought a collection of scarves, pastries, fresh produce, Indian food, and used books. It was a great opportunity to see people from Henley other than the rowers here to race.
Kerry Walsh and I went for noon tea at the Upstairs Tea Room. Although the servers were extremely courteous and interested in our racing, we decided that if we ever are able to return to the Tea Room, we will probably strive to wear something nicer than our practice clothing.
So far, we have had the privilege to do one-on-one practice pieces against Durham, New Castle, Warwick, Worchester Polytechnic Institute (from Massachusetts) and our own team. Our practices have been a nice opportunity to see numerous European teams that we would have otherwise never had the chance to race.
In an attempt to sample every dessert option available in the town of Henley, a portion of the senior class went to the Chocolate Theater Café. Samantha Cowan learned that hot fudge is not always an ice cream topping option in Henley and received a side of hot chocolate with her gelato serving.
The junior class made dinner, with far higher aspirations than the previous senior endeavor. Lead by Bobbie (Barbara) McKenna, the juniors assembled shepard's pie completely from scratch with a delicious and generous vegetarian version as well! The dinner was completed with Olivia Babiec's expertly made Oreo Truffle Things and Sierra Baca's Probably-Not-From-A-Box Brownies.
For post-dinner, we will be watching the English match with one of our phenomenal host families who have, so far, been extremely patient with our particularly novice questions.
Tomorrow marks the beginning of racing for the senior eight and the senior double. We are all very excited to officially start racing!
