Kevin Devoy Jr., David Pearce, Matthew Cimato and Noel Blanco each earned two victories on opening day of the tournament to advance, while Zack Fuentes stays alive in the wrestlebacks for a chance at a third place finish and is guaranteed a minimum of eighth place.
Blanco highlighted the first day of competition for the Dragons at 157 pounds as he first earned a pin over Harvard's Colby Knight to advance to the quarterfinals. There, Blanco took on returning All-American Mitchell Minotti of Lehigh who is currently ranked 11th nationally and is seeded second in the 157 weight class. Blanco, who was seeded seventh, secured the go-ahead take down with just nine seconds remaining to earn a 3-2 decision over his nationally ranked opponent. The senior returns to the mat to take on the six-seed, John Boyle of American tomorrow morning in the semifinals.
A runner-up last year at 133 pounds in his first appearance at the EIWA Championships, Devoy came out strong yet again at this year's tournament. The No. 2-seeded Devoy earned a 9-3 win over Navy's Zachary Davis before securing an 11-5 decision over Bucknell's No. 7 seed, Grimaldi Gonzalez. Devoy advances to the semifinals tomorrow where he will take on the six-seed, Angelo Amenta of Columbia.
Pearce, who was seeded eighth at 141 pounds going into the conference tournament, earned a tie-breaker win over Columbia's Matt Leshinger in his first match of the day. He then advanced to the semifinal round as he won by medical forfeit over the top-seeded Todd Preston of Harvard. Pearce will take on the fourth-seeded Jordan Laster of Princeton tomorrow morning.
Cimato, who earned the fourth seed at 149 going into the EIWA Championships, picked up a 9-4 decision over Harvard's Patrick Hogan to advance to the quarterfinals. He then went on to defeat fifth-seeded Victor Lopez from Bucknell, 8-2 to advance to competition Saturday. Cimato will face Cornell's top-seeded Christopher Villalonga in his opening match of day two.
Fuentes had to come out fighting at 125 as he faced the top-seeded Nahshon Garrett of Cornell in his first match of the day, where he ultimately lost by fall. In the first round of consolations, Fuentes defeated Franklin & Marshall's Edgar Garcia by major decision to stay alive and advance to competition Saturday. Next up, he will take on the five seed, William Watterson of Brown as he attempts to wrestle back for a third place finish.
Nick Elmer won his first match of the day with a pin over the eight seed, Tyrel White of Columbia at 165. However, he dropped a major decision to Navy's top-seeded Peyton Walsh in the quarterfinals that sent him to the consolations, where he lost a 9-7 decision to the seventh-seeded Zack Zupan of Binghamton.
Despite losing his first match of the day at 174 to the three seed, Santiago Martinez of Lehigh, Stephen Loiseau was able to battle back with a major decision over Bucknell's Joey Krulock in the first round of consolations. Loiseau was eliminated, however, in the second round of wrestlebacks as he lost a 3-2 decision to Conan Shuster of Sacred Heart.
