
Crew Advances 12 Boats to Saturday at 77th Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta

PHILADELPHIA – Drexel Crew set out for its third consecutive championship at the 77th annual Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta on Friday, May 8 on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pa. Semifinals and finals action will take place on Saturday.
Drexel sent 13 boats into competition Friday, advancing 12 of them to Saturday semifinals and finals.
Drexel's men's varsity eight won its heat by open water with a time of 6:04.922 in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat to advance to the semifinals. The Dragons will rowing from lane three at 10:51 a.m., as the top two finishers will advance to the grand final. Finalists will vie for the Richard O'Brien Trophy on Saturday at 4:33 p.m. to close out the Dad Vail.
Following the men was the women, who won their heat with a 6:51.504 to advance to Saturday's semifinal at 10:31 a.m. in lane three. The top two finishers in the semifinals will row in the grand finals for the Evelyn Bergman Trophy on Saturday at 4:23 p.m.
Closing out Friday was the second varsity eights beginning with the men. The Dragons took to the Lois Krall boat and posted a winning 6:15.002. They moved on to the semifinals at 9:28 a.m. in lane three Saturday morning where the top three advance to the finals. Finalists will vie for the Ernie Bayer Trophy at 2:43 p.m. Saturday.
Finishing out Drexel's long day at Friday's heats was the women's second varsity eight with a strong win with a time of 7:21.171 in the Maria Papadakis boat. The boat advanced to the semifinals on Saturday in lane at 10:31 a.m. The top three advance to the finals and finalists will race for the Coleman D. Boylan Trophy at 2:33 p.m.
The men's varsity four advanced to the quarterfinals Friday beginning at 5:24 p.m. in the LeBow College of Business boat, following a winning 6:55.712 time Friday in heat three. The boat finished second with a 7:11 in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals Saturday at 10:14 a.m. The top three boats in each semifinal will race for the Thomas A. Curran Cup in the final 3:33 p.m.
Continuing success with the varsity fours was the women in the Sandra Lee Sheller boat as they advanced to the Saturday semifinal at 9:56 a.m. with a time of 7:50.197 in the heats. The top two crews in each semifinal will race for the Margaret McNiff Trophy on Saturday at 3:23 p.m.
Drexel's freshmen four began competition winning its head Friday with a 7:10.247 in the Oxholm boat. They advanced to Saturday's semifinal in lane three at 7:39 a.m. Finals will be held at 1:33 p.m. Saturday for the Lindy Cup.
Drexel's women's pair, in the Jeremy and Theresa MacDonald boat, moved on to Saturday with a second-place 8:20.680 in heats on Friday. They will race from lane two in the semifinals at 8:34 a.m. The top two finishers in the semifinals will race for the title at 2:13 p.m. Saturday.
The Dragons rowed singles for the first time this season. Drexel's Taylor Brady rowed to a second-place 9:25.131 to advance to Saturday's final at 1:03 p.m. For the men, Drexel's George Twardy rowed to a second-place time of his own, 8:05.343, to advance to Saturday's semifinals at 7 a.m. The top two will advance to the final at 1:13 p.m.
The men's freshmen eight, in the Joseph Greipp boat, paced the competition in its heat with a 6:30.058 to advance to the semifinals at 8:15 a.m. in lane three. The top two will advance to the finals that will take place at 2:03 p.m. for the Toby Wallace Bowl.
Drexel's freshmen women followed by posting a second-place 7:27.016 in the Marlene Buckley boat to advance to Saturday's semifinals in lane five at 8:03 a.m. The top two advance and the finalists will row for the Sarah Vaughan Trophy at 1:53 p.m. Saturday.
The men's pair, in the Toby Wallace boat, finished with the fourth fastest time of all pairs, 7:08.999; however, all the top boats were in the heat, and Drexel's fourth place finish was not enough to advance. Drexel's men's pair won the gold medal in 2010, 2011 and 2013.
The Dragons are looking to win their third straight Dad Vail overall team title after winning in 2013 and 2014. Drexel also comes into this year's Dad Vail looking to regain the men's point title that it won in 2013 and to defend the men's second varsity eight gold medal.
The Blue and Gold has won 42 Dad Vail medals in its history, including 16 gold. Last year, Drexel won the men's second varsity eight gold, silver in the women's varsity eight and women's second varsity eight and the bronze in the men's freshmen four. The Dragons are looking to become the first back-to-back-to-back winner since Purdue won five years in a row from 2000-2004.
