RICHMOND, Va. – The Drexel women's swimming and diving team earned two CAA awards on Wednesday afternoon as announced by the conference. Junior Rachel Bernhardt was named the Swimmer of the Year while fellow junior Emily Lau was selected to the All-Academic Team.
RACHEL BERNHARDT – CAA WOMEN'S SWIMMER OF THE YEAR
Bernhardt earned the first two gold medals at the 2016 CAA Swimming Championships for the women's program. She finished first in both the 100 breaststroke at 1:00.65 and 2:10.89 in the 200 breaststroke as she was named both the Most Outstanding Swimmer and the Meet and Swimmer of the Year. She then became the first Drexel women's swimmer to qualify NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, hosted in Atlanta in early March. At NCAAs, she notched a time of 1:01.04 in the 100 breaststroke and 2:13.30 in the 200 breaststroke for both of her second fastest times ever. Following the NCAA Championships, the Drexel junior qualified for her second U.S. Olympic Trial event as she notched a 2:32.70 in the long course 200 breaststroke. She had previously qualified for the 100 breaststroke earlier in the summer of 2015. She also earned the team's Most Valuable award at the squad's season-end banquet.
EMILY LAU – ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM
Lau maintained a 3.96 grade point average as a biology/pre-med major. At the CAA Championships, Lau helped the women tied a school benchmark in the 200 free relay with a collective time of 1:34.25. Lau also swam in the finals for the 200 medley relay in addition to numerous prelim events. She was named the squad's Scholar Athlete at the team's season-end banquet. On the season, her top 50 free time of 24.27 came at the Patriot Invitational, 52.86 in the 100 free at CAAs, 27.18 in the 50 fly against Howard, 57.96 in the 100 fly at CAAs and 1:00.74 in the 100 IM at the Patriot Invitational.
