Women's Crew Advances to a Grand Final, Wins Two Petites at Eastern Sprints

WORCESTER, Mass. -- In its final tune-up before the Dad Vail Regatta, Drexel women's crew earned a sixth overall finish and won two petite finals at the Eastern Sprints on Sunday on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.
Sunday's racing featured top competition along the east coast, including conference foes in Northeastern and Buffalo. Crews fought through windy and rainy racing conditions for the majority of the day. Drexel's varsity four advanced to the grand final and finished sixth overall to highlight the team's trip to Massachusetts. The Dragons also got wins in petite finals from the second varsity eight and the third varsity eight. The varsity eight also had a strong day, finishing second in the petite final after just missing out on the grand.
Racing in the Sandra Lee Sheller boat, the varisty four continued its strong season by rowing to an 8:05.201 in its heat to advance to the grand final where it finished sixth overall with an 8:15.586. Drexel's second varsity eight took home the petite final victory to finish seventh overall in the Marlene Buckley II boat with a time of 7:25.958 in the final to win by open water. The third varsity eight also picked up a victory in the petite final, beating a mix of third varsity, fourth varsity and freshmen boats, in the Maria Papadakis boat, with a final time of 7:59.015 to win by more than 15 seconds. The varsity eight finished off its strong day with a second-place finish in the petite final with a time of 7:17.143, falling less than five seconds behind Boston.

The Dragons next competitive event will be the Dad Vail Regatta on May 13-14 where the team will go for its fourth straight overall title.
