RICHMOND, Va. - A memorable first week in the Blue and Gold for freshman Daniel Klemm culminated on Monday when he claimed a pair of weekly awards. The Colonial Athletic Association named Klemm its Rookie of the Week, as did the Philadelphia Soccer Six.
Klemm was recognized by the organization following an impressive debut at St. John's on Friday night. He played all 110 minutes of the scoreless draw for the Dragons and came up with a pair of potentially game-saving plays. First, Klemm recorded a team save in the 37th minute. Senior goalkeeper Tyler Afflerbach had made a tremendous point-blank save moments before, but the rebound found the foot of St. John's' Harry Cooksley, whose shot got behind Afflerbach. As it neared the goal line, Klemm raced in to poke it away and preserve the shutout.
The game went to overtime still scoreless, and remained that way into a second overtime period. Then, in the 104th minute, Klemm broke up the final strong scoring opportunity for the Red Storm with a sliding blocked shot as the hosts charged into the box.
The rookie out of Huntington Beach, Calif. shared his CAA honor with Hofstra rookie forward Luke Brown, who scored in the Pride's 3-1 win over Stony Brook.
Klemm and the Dragons will return to action on Tuesday when they head up Broad Street to take on La Salle in the teams' first Philadelphia Soccer Six battle of the season. That game is set to kick off at La Salle's McCarthy Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
