PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel Rowing program officially dedicated four new shells to its fleet Saturday afternoon following the Bergen and Kelly Cups at a naming ceremony held at the Bachelor's Barge Club on Boathouse Row.
Drexel University President John Fry, Director of Athletics Dr. Eric Zillmer and Director of Men's and Women's Rowing Paul Savell unveiled the Cara Fry, the Lois Krall II, the Bella Santorum and the Diane Corle. Both the Fry and the Krall are eights, while the Santorum and Corle are fours.
"Adding the Cara Fry, the Lois Krall II, the Bella Santorum and the Diane Corle shells to our fleet is a huge boost to the Drexel Rowing program," Savell said. "With generous gifts from Drexel Rowing donors, we are able to provide athletes with the best equipment. Our athletes are completely confident in their boats and equipment as we continue our ascent onto the national rowing scene."
Last season, the women's varsity eight rowed the Cara Fry boat to a silver medal at the Dad Vail Regatta to help the Dragons to their fourth consecutive overall team title. The Lois Krall II boat made its debut on April 1 when the men's varsity eight raced against Penn. Both boats won gold at the Kerr Cup last weekend. The Bella Santorum boat made its debut for the program at the Kerr Cup with a second-place finish. The Diane Corle boat debuted Saturday with a win by the women's varsity four at the Kelly Cup.
Earlier in the day on Saturday, the Dragons' women's varsity eight won the Kelly Cup for the sixth year in a row. Click here for more.
