PHILADELPHIA – Former Drexel men's basketball standout big man Rodney Williams has signed a professional contract to play for Maccabi Ra'anana in Israel. Williams will team up with fellow former Drexel standout Samme Givens, who recently re-signed with the club.
Williams, an All-CAA Third Team selection in 2017, led the Dragons last season averaging 15.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. He shot better than 52 percent from the floor while playing more than 30 minutes a game across 32 starts. The Richmond, Va. native finished his career with 1,158 points, good for 25th on Drexel's all-time scoring list. The 6-foot-8 forward also ranks seventh in blocked shots (128) and 17th in rebounding (687) on the school's career list.
Last season in his second year with Maccabi Ra'anana, Givens led the team in scoring with 17.7 points per game and blocked shots with 1.5 per game. He was also second on the team in rebounding (8.1) and assists (3.9). He helped lead Maccabi Ra'anana to an 18-10 record and a quarterfinals appearance. A 2012 graduate from Drexel, Givens is one of only three players to record at least 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in his Drexel career (Malik Rose and Bob Stephens). Givens was a two-time All-CAA Second Team selection and helped lead the Dragons to a school-record 29 wins and an NIT quarterfinals appearance in 2012.
Maccabi Ra'anana plays in the 14-team Liga Leumit – Israel-National League – which is the second-tier professional basketball league in Israel.
