PHILADELPHIA - Drexel Head Softball Coach Carl Taylor announced the addition of Michelle Schlichtig-Hastings and Ray Hastings to his coaching staff for the 2017-18 season.
The husband and wife duo comes to Drexel from Rutgers-Camden, where Schlichtig-Hastings was the head coach for the last three seasons and Hastings served as her top assistant.
A two-time All-America pitcher who led the Scarlet Raptors to the NCAA Division III national championship as a senior in 2006, Schlichtig-Hastings returned to her alma mater in 2015 and immediately guided Rutgers-Camden to its best season since 2007. Rutgers-Camden earned New Jersey Athletic Conference playoff berths in her first two seasons at the helm of the team.
Prior to coaching at Rutgers-Camden, Schlichtig-Hastings served as the head varsity softball coach at Haddon Heights High School. She posted a 105-45 record in her six years as the Garnets' head coach and led Haddon Heights to capture four Colonial Conference Championships (2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014), two South Jersey Championships (2012 and 2013) and win the New Jersey State Championship in 2013. That 2013 team earned her honors as the Courier-Post Softball Coach of the Year. For this as well as her performance as a high school athlete at Haddon Heights, Schlichtig-Hastings was inducted into the Camden County Sports Hall of Fame in 2016.
As a student-athlete at Rutgers-Camden, Schlichtig-Hastings compiled a stellar 82-17 record during her three years with the Scarlet Raptors. She set program career records for wins, ERA (0.75), innings (659), games (107), games started (94), complete games (84), strikeouts (906), opponent batting average (.146), shutouts (40) and saves (6). She also threw a record seven no-hitters, including a pair of perfect games.
Schlichtig-Hastings graduated from Rutgers-Camden in 2010 with a Bachelor's degree in sociology. She has been a Professional Fastpitch and All-Skills Instructor since 2006.
Hastings has been coaching alongside Schlichtig-Hastings throughout her career at both Haddon Heights and Rutgers-Camden and played an essential role in all of each teams' successes.
No stranger to athletic success himself, Hastings was a standout baseball player at Haddon Heights and Camden County College. He then moved on to professional baseball in 2007, playing for the Lewisville Lizards who were coached by former Major Leaguer and current New York Mets First Base Coach Tom Goodwin. During the 2008 season he played for the Texarkana Gunslingers under former Major League pitcher Steve Trout. He led the Continental League in games started and finished third in the league in runs scored.
Hastings has also served as a Professional Fastpitch Instructor since 2006.
