CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Austin DeSanto and Garett Hammond advanced to the semifinals in their respective weight classes Monday to highlight the Drexel wrestling team's day at the annual Southern Scuffle at McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tenn.
DeSanto, the No. 6-ranked 133-pounder in the country and No. 3-seeded in the weight class at the Scuffle, continued his torrid pace with back-to-back technical falls to open competition and a decision to move into Tuesday's semifinals. Hammond earned signature wins over two seeded wrestlers to set up a semifinals matchup with the tournament's No. 2 seed at 157 pounds.
At 133 pounds, DeSanto started Day 1 with a technical fall win over Gardner-Webb's Brandon Bright, 22-7, in three and a half minutes. The freshman than followed that up with a 26-10 technical fall win over Utah Valley's Durbin Lloren in just under five and a half minutes. In the quarterfinals, DeSanto controlled an 8-5 decision over Campbell's Nathan Boston to set up a semifinals matchup with the No. 4-ranked 133-pounder in the nation, Jack Mueller of Virginia. Hammond worked an 8-2 decision over The Citadel's Rian Burris to open the tournament, then outlasting No. 17 Coleman Hammond of Cal State Bakersfield, 3-2, to move to the quarterfinals. In the quarters, Hammond beat out the tournament's No. 3 seed, Ian Brown of Lehigh, in a 9-3 decision to set up a matchup Tuesday with Duke's Mitch Finesilver, the No. 2 seed, for a spot in the title bout. FloWrestling named Hammond's win over Brown as one of the six biggest upsets from Day 1 of the Scuffle.
Three other Dragons advanced to the quarterfinals on the day, including Ebed Jarrell, Stephen Loiseau and Joey Goodhart. Jarrell, wrestling at 165 pounds, breezed past Northern Iowa's Isaiah Patton with a 16-0 (6:13) technical fall then a 12-1 major decision over Chattanooga's Chad Pyke to move into the quarters, where he ran into the nation's top-ranked 165-pounder, Vincenzo Joseph of Penn State. Loiseau, the eight seed at 197 pounds, started strong with 15-0 technical fall over Appalchian State's Paul Carson before pinning Utah Valley's Tanner Orndorff in just 84 seconds. In the quarterfinals, he found himself with a tough matchup against the No. 9-ranked 197-pounds Anthony Cassar of Penn State, wrestled well, but found himself on the wrong side of a 4-1 decision. Goodhart, the No. 7 seed at 285 pounds, won by tech fall over Penn State's Anthony Nichols, 15-0, to start the day. He then outlasted Northern Iowa's Carter Isley with a 5-3 decision, before dropping a 10-2 major decision to Duke's Jacob Kasper, the No. 5-ranked heavyweight, in the quarters.
