PHILADELPHIA – Junior Tramaine Isabell exploded for a career-high 40 points as Drexel rallied from a 10-point first-half deficit to defeat Elon, 83-79. Isabell scored 28 points in the second half as the Dragons (8-14, 2-7 CAA) shot a blistering 57 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes to earn the league win at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Thursday night. The Phoenix dropped to 12-10 overall and 4-5 in the CAA.
With less than four minutes to play, Elon's Sheldon Eberhardt hit a three-pointer to give the Phoenix a 72-67 lead. The Dragons responded with a 10-0 run which gave them the lead for good. Isabell had all 10 points, including a pair of three-pointers. The Phoenix cut the lead to two on three occasions in the last 1:12 of the game, but each time Drexel answered. Sammy Mojica sealed the game with two free throws with just four seconds to go as Drexel snapped its five-game losing streak.
Isabell finished the game 14-for-23 from the floor and nailed seven three-pointers. His 40 points were the most for a Drexel player since Michael Anderson scored 42 against Rider in 1988. He also had six boards and three steals in 32 minutes. Harper had a nice game off the bench for Drexel. The junior scored 14 points on just eight field goal attempts. Alihan Demir added 11 points and seven boards, while Austin Williams had eight points, eight rebounds and three blocks.
Drexel finished the game with just six turnovers, its second lowest total of the season. The Dragons had a season-high 12 three-pointers and were 7-for-14 from deep in the second half.
Elon's Tyler Seibring led four players in double figures for the Phoenix with 19 points. Steven Santa Ana and Eberhardt each scored 13. Elon shot 49 percent overall and made 11 of its 28 long-range attempts.
Elon led by as many as 10 during the first half, but the Dragons used a 10-1 run, capped by a long Mojica jump shot, which cut the lead to 26-25. Drexel trailed by just three at the break despite shooting just 37 percent in the first half. Isabell led everyone with 12 first half points.
The Dragons continue their three-game homestand on Saturday. Northeastern comes to town for a 2 p.m. tip off Saturday as Homecoming Weekend continues on campus.
