Rowing Advances 12 Boats to Grand Finals at Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel rowing team sent a dozen boats to the grand finals Friday at the 80th annual Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River. Competition concludes Saturday, culminating in the heavyweight eight races in the evening.
On the women's side, the Dragons advanced the varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four, third varsity eight, second varsity four A, freshmen four and quad to grand finals. The men advanced the second varsity eight, third varsity eight, freshmen eight, second varsity four and freshmen four to grand finals. The men's varsity eight advanced to the petite final along with the men's varsity four. The men's pair and women's second varsity four B are into the third final.
The women's varsity eight, in the Alleva XVII boat, took third in its semifinal with a time of 6:48.022, behind Boston U and Fordham, for a spot in Saturday's grand final. The Dragons will try to defend their gold medal at 4:40 p.m. The women's varsity four, in the Diane Corle boat, continued its impressive spring with a first-place time of 7:24.675 in the semis to move into the grand final at 3:40 p.m. The women's second varsity eight, in the Cara Fry boat, rowed a winning 6:46.852 in its heat to advance, while the men's second varsity eight, in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat, rowed a winning 5:56.964 in the semis to move into the grand final at 2:40 p.m.
The Dragons got a strong showing from the men's third varsity eight in the Lois Krall boat with a winning heat time of 6:13.138. The women's second varsity four, in the Sandra Lee Sheller boat, took a winning semifinal time of 7:38.494 to move into the 1:50 p.m. final. The men's second varsity four, in the Tobey & Kim Oxholm boat, also took first in its semifinal with a 6:51.887 for a spot in the 2 p.m. grand final. Drexel's men's freshmen eight advanced with a second-place time of 6:10.750 to race in Saturday's 1:20 p.m. grand final, while the men's freshmen four, in the LeBow College of Business boat, also advanced with a time of 7:03.344 and will race in the grand at 1 p.m.
Two Drexel boats will wait for Saturday to begin competition as they head straight to finals. The women's third varsity eight races for the gold at 2:10 p.m., followed by the debut of the women's quad against Brock at 2:50 p.m. The first grand final the Dragons could race in on Saturday would be the men's pair at 12:40 p.m.
The Dragons' men's varsity eight, the reigning heavyweight eight gold medalist, finished third in its semifinal and will race Saturday in the petite final. The Lois Krall II boat finished with a final time of 5:45.482.
Following racing at the Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta, the Drexel women will turn their attention to the Colonial Athletic Association Championship on Sunday, May 13 on the Cooper River with a spot at the NCAA Rowing Championship on the line. The men will head to IRA National Championships on Mercer Lake on the first weekend of June to close out their season.

Drexel's Dad Vail Excellence
Drexel Rowing has won the overall team title at the Dad Vail Regatta in each of the last five years (2013-17). Last year, the Dragons won the women's team title for the first time in program history, and they have previously won the men's team title in 2013 and 2015. Drexel has won 62 medals all-time at the Dad Vail Regatta, including a program-record five gold medals for a total of seven last season. In 2017, Drexel became the first school since Purdue in 2007 to win the men's and women's varsity heavyweight eight gold medals in same year.
