HENLEY-ON-THAMES, England – The Drexel women's rowing team is set to begin competition Friday at the Henley Women's Regatta on the Thames in Henley-on-Thames, England. The Dragons will send three boats into action – varsity eight, second varsity eight and double.
The second varsity eight, racing in the Aspirational Academic 8 division, will be the first Drexel boat on the 1,500-meter Thames race course in a time trial beginning at 4 a.m. (EST). The double, in the Aspirational 2X division, follows at 6:20 a.m. (EST), while the varsity eight takes to the Championship 8 division time trial at 7:25 a.m. (EST). Times in the time trials will be used to determine matchups for racing later in the day Friday and Saturday.
This trip marks the third time Director of Rowing Paul Savell has brought the Drexel women to Henley. The Dragons' women went in 2010 and 2014. In 2010 at the women's regatta, Drexel's varsity eight stunned the rowing world, winning the Elite 8 Championship and the Sports Council Cup.
The Dragons have been busy between racing at the Reading Amateur Regatta and the Henley Women's Regatta. They have been sightseeing around London and attended a networking event with Drexel Alumni and Vanguard MBA students. Check out some photos below!
Drexel opened the trip across the pond with a gold medal at the Reading Amateur Regatta. For more, check out the previous Dragon Dispatches post.
