Charles J. Horter, a Drexel graduate and former captain of the sailing team, went on to serve as the Commodore and President of the Middle-Atlantic Sailing Association and Vice President of the U.S. Collegiate Sailing Association.
Horter’s career accomplishments clearly illustrate his leadership both in the boat and in the sport of sailing. He competed in the 1968, ’72, ’76 and ’80 Olympic Trials. In the 1972 Olympics, Horter served as part of the crew of a 31-foot Dragon Class-A keelboat that won the bronze medal for the United States.
In 1975 he won the Tempest Class Two-Man Keelboat North American Championship after placing third in the 1972 National Laser Championship. Horter capped his career in 1981 when he was runner-up for the Prince of Wales Trophy, the top prize in U.S. national match racing.
