Mark Hemmerle was considered the “best swimmer in Drexel history” at the time of his graduation in 1978. He was a six-time East Coast Conference champion for the Dragons and was the first Drexel swimmer to win an Eastern Seaboard championship when he finished first in the 200 breaststroke.
Hemmerle participated in the NCAA national championships in all four of his years at Drexel. He was also an AAU national qualifier and was a 1976 Olympic Trials qualifier. A two-time captain and a two-time recipient of the Outstanding Swimmer at Drexel, Hemmerle set the school record for both the 100 and 200 breaststroke. He was also named the Outstanding Graduating Athlete at Drexel, the Outstanding Sophomore Athlete and won the 1977 ECC Outstanding Swimmer Award.
