PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel tennis team will kick off the 2012-13 season a week from today, as both the men's and women's squads will participate in local tournaments to get their fall schedules underway. The women head down 33rd Street to take part in the Cissie Leary Invitational at Penn, while the men head out to Saint Joseph's to participate in the Saint Joseph's Invitational.
The men's Saint Joseph's Invitational will follow starting September 28, followed by a trip to the Hampton Roads Invitational in Virginia for both teams on October 5. Then, before the Dragons prepare for ITA Championships to conclude their fall season, the women will face Monmouth in a dual match on October 14 followed by a contest against Rider for both the men and the women on October 15.
“I am very excited to start our strong fall schedule,” said Mehdi Rhazali, who will be leading the Dragons. “I look forward to the opportunity to remain a part of the Dragon family and to lead this program, and I'm looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead of us in the fall as we get started.” Rhazali, a 2011 graduate of Drexel, served as an assistant coach last season, helping guide the Dragons to strong spring seasons. Joining Rhazali on the staff is Kristen Harris, a Howard University graduate who has coached at the Bommarito Performance Systems academy in Aventura, Florida and the Legacy Youth Tennis and Education Center in Philadelphia.
Drexel's team this year is bolstered by several new additions to the squad, including Xavier Saavedra, Rishabh Mehra, Tyler Pultro and Alex Fioravante on the men's side, and Erin Bowsher and Amanda Tilled on the women's side.
The draws for the season-opening tournaments at Penn and Saint Joseph's have not yet been released. That is expected to be available next week.
