Women's Tennis Completes SJU Invitational

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's tennis team wrapped up its weekend at the Saint Joseph's Invitational with three victories on Sunday, as Mya Fuentes and Salma Ziouti won the Doubles Flight 1 title, while Ziouti earned a crown with a victory in the Singles Flight 1 final and Fuentes took home the Singles Flight 2 title.
Fuentes and Ziouti had advanced to the championship match of Flight 1 in doubles on Sunday and played Alexa Martinez and Themis Haliou to decide the victor. The Drexel duo pulled out to an 8-1 victory, capping an impressive 4-0 weekend for the pair.
Singles play began on Saturday and continued through the day on Sunday. Drexel got a number of favorable results on Day One of singles action, but only Ziouti and Fuentes were able to cap it off with a win on Sunday. Ziouti had an impressive 3-0 weekend as she finally took down Lexi Denucci (Villanova) on Sunday, 6-3, 6-1, for the crown. Fuentes also went 3-0 on the weekend, defeating Amelia Lawson (Towson) 6-2, 6-2 for the title.
Ziouti and Fuentes were not the only Dragons to fare well in singles play at the SJU invitational. Simpson and Martinez both made it to the semifinals of their flights before falling. The duo of Simpson and Martinez also made it to the finals of doubles Flight 2 before falling to Carina Burdick and Olivia Kapp, 8-2.
Drexel will return to the courts when it competes at the Penn Invitational beginning on Oct. 5.
