WASHINGTON, D.C. – Drexel Crew finished third overall and the varsity eight swept its competition Saturday at the George Washington Invitational on the Potomac River.
The Dragons rowed through rough conditions and high winds Saturday morning as the No. 14-ranked varsity eight rowed to victory against No. 15 George Washington and Virginia. In the Sandra Lee Sheller II, Drexel crossed the finish line at 5:38.10, besting second-place Virginia's 5:39.50. On Friday when racing against Georgetown, the Dragons' varsity eight narrowly defeated Georgetown (receiving votes) by seven tenths of a second. Drexel crossed the finish line at 5:35.90, while the Hoyas' 5:36.60 was just barely edged out.
As close as Friday's varsity eight race was, the second varsity eight race was even closer, and the Dragons also come out on top. Racing in the Lois Krall boat, Drexel finished with a 5:41.10, just squeaking by Georgetown, which rowed to a 5:41.60. On Saturday, Drexel rowed to a 6:01.40, falling behind second-place Virginia by just half a second.
Drexel's third varsity eight in the Annette Pennoni boat finished second Saturday with a 6:15.00, behind George Washington's 6:04.50. On Friday, it fell to Georgetown, finishing second at 5:51.50, six seconds behind Georgetown's 5:45.10. The freshmen eight, in the Joseph Greipp boat, finished with a strong 5:54.60 in that same third varsity eight race on Friday, finishing third. On Saturday, it finished third with a 6:10.70 behind some tough competition in Navy and George Washington.
The women's team will be competing at the Knecht Cup this weekend on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. Click here to read more.
The Dragons will return home to the Schuylkill River on Saturday, April 16 for the racing of the 50th annual Drexel-hosted Kerr Cup Regatta.
