WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Despite the cold and wintery mix leading to difficult racing conditions Saturday, Drexel Crew completed Day 1 at the Knecht Cup Regatta on Mercer Lake.
Because of the weather, race organizers were forced to alter the schedule, pushing some of the semifinal races to Sunday morning. The Dragons still have six boats alive for Sunday's action – the women's varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four, freshmen eight, men's freshmen four and pair.
The women's varsity eight, racing in the Cara Fry boat, finished second in its heat to UMass by posting a 7:26.84 to move onto the semifinals on Sunday at 8:18 a.m. The second varsity eight, racing in the Marlene Buckley II boat, finished third with a 7:34.73 in its heat and just a second and a half behind second-place UConn to race in Sunday's semifinal at 8:12 a.m. Closing out the eights, the freshmen eight, rowing in the Maria Papadakis boat, finished with a time of 8:15.54 to advance to Sunday's semifinal at 8:55 a.m.
Drexel's women's varsity four, in the Sandra Lee Sheller boat, also had a strong showing on Saturday, winning its semifinal by nearly three seconds with an 8:21.80. The Dragons got to the semifinal by finishing second in their heat with a time of 7:58.59. They will now race for the grand final Sunday at 12:25 p.m.
The Dragons also had two men's boats post times good enough to advance to Day 2. The freshmen four, racing in the Oxholm boat, finished fourth in its semifinal with an 8:09.31 to move onto the petite final Sunday at 11:22 a.m. To get to the semifinal, the freshmen four finished with a time of 8:13.16 in its heat. Racing in its first competition of the season, Drexel's varsity pair A also advanced, moving onto Sunday's final at 10:54 a.m. with a fourth-place time of 7:48.91 in its heat.
Drexel's men competed at the George Washington Invitational, and the varsity eight put on a strong showing against nationally ranked competition. Click here to reach more
