David Florio is in his 10th year with Drexel Rowing in 2019-20 after returning to the coaching staff as an assistant ahead of the spring 2018 season following a stint as the Boathouse Manager of Drexel’s home boathouse, the Bachelors Barge Club. Florio was originally named an assistant coach in November of 2012 after two years as a graduate assistant. He moved over to the boathouse following the spring 2014 season. Florio is the boat and equipment coordinator for the men's and women’s teams.
Florio has been on the Drexel Rowing staff throughout its rise onto the national rowing scene and has assisted in coaching the men’s eights during his time as a coach. In 2018, he coached the men’s third varsity eight to a gold medal at the Dad Vail Regatta, helping the Dragons to their sixth straight overall title. Before leaving his coaching position to assume boathouse duties, Florio helped the Dragons to their first ever Dad Vail men’s varsity eight gold, team title and men’s title in 2013. The 2014 Florio-coached second varsity eight found huge success upsetting Oregon State at the Husky Open as well as winning gold at the Knecht Cup, Kerr Cup, Bergen Cup and Dad Vail Regatta. He has also played a crucial role in preparing men’s boats for competition at IRA National Championships, for which the Dragons have qualified as a team from 2012-17 and 2019 while sending one boat in 2018.
Prior to coaching at Drexel, Florio began his coaching career at Lower Merion High School and Archbishop Prendergast. Florio was a coxswain at Drexel from 2000-05. He led the novice boats to an invitation to compete in the IRA’s. During his final two seasons, Florio coxed the varsity eights. Following college, he was selected to the 2007 U.S. National Team and competed in the men’s pair event in the World Championships held in Munich, Germany. In 2008-09, Florio coxed Vesper’s women’s lightweight eight to a gold medal at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta and earned second place at the 2009 Head of the Charles Regatta.
Prior to rowing at Drexel, Florio attended Saint Joseph’s Preparatory School from 1997 to 2000. He was a full time undefeated coxswain as a freshman and a senior. During his sophomore and junior year, Florio raced single scull winning a Manny Flick Regatta. He also helped crews that either won or placed at Catholics, Philadelphia City Championships, Robert White, Stotesbury Cup and SRAA Nationals.
In 2006, Florio graduated from Drexel University with a bachelor’s degree in finance.
