Debbie Ponist is one of the most decorated athletes in both basketball and softball history at Drexel. After leading the team in assists and scoring during both the 1988-89 and 1989-90 seasons, Ponist graduated sixth all-time in both career points (1,254) and career assists (336). Her single game record for steals (12 against Lafayette on February 21, 1990) still stands 15 years later, as does her single season record for steals (102). She is also ranked second in all-time free throw percentage (.779), third all-time in free-throws with 436, ninth in field goals made (405) and tenth in scoring average, averaging 11.3 ppg. Ponist played on the 1988 team that took home the ECC Championship and in 1989-90 was named both team captain and First Team All-ECC.
Ponists softball career is equally as impressive. The 1988 ECC Softball Player of the Year, Ponist holds the single-game record for triples, RBI’s and stolen bases. She is also the single-season record holder for runs, hits, total bases and slugging percentage. After leading the team in batting average and runs for three consecutive seasons, she graduated with the best batting average, slugging percentage and the most home runs in Drexel University history.
