Dr. Fred W. Ulmer, Jr.
- Induction:
- 1986
- Class:
- 1957
Fred Ulmer wrestled for three seasons and played football for three years. He was a three-year starter as an offensive guard and a defensive end on the gridiron, earning All-East honors in 1954 when he also scored a touchdown and five extra points, a rarity for a lineman.
As a wrestler, Ulmer served two years as team captain. He was undefeated as Drexel’s heavyweight during the 1954-55 season and won the MAC championship before placing second in the AAU regional tournament. He lost to the eventual national champion, 7-6. Ulmer pinned every one of his opponents in 1956-57 en route to his second-straight MAC championship and an Eastern Regional title. His only loss came in the NCAA Championship semifinals. Ulmer was undefeated in his final 21 regular-season matches over three years and was both the F.C. Walton Award winner as Drexel’s Outstanding Wrestler and the Lt. Green Award in 1957 as the Outstanding Graduating Athlete.
Ulmer received his master’s degree from Temple and earned a Ph.D. in Education Administration from Nova University.
