Gregory Newman was the second Drexel men’s basketball player ever to score 1,000 career points. In just three seasons as a Dragon, Newman tallied 1,016 points in 65 games, all of them coming prior to the inception of the three-point basket in college basketball.
Upon graduation Newman held seven school records. He is still ranked among Drexel’s all-time leaders in career scoring and free throws made. He also holds the single-game record for field goals made, which he set with 16 baskets against Franklin & Marshall on Feb. 16, 1974. Newman was the first Drexel player to compete in the Liberty Bell Classic and he was named MVP of the game. He was an All-Middle Athletic Conference and Philadelphia-Area All-Star as a senior and also earned the team’s Lt. John P. Loomis Award as the outstanding player.
