J. Peterson Ryder

J. Peterson Ryder spent four decades as an integral part of the Drexel athletic program. He was the school’s first Director of Athletics and served in that position from 1919 until he took over as Drexel’s first Dean of Men during the 1922-23 school year.
Ryder started at Drexel in 1891 when President MacAlister appointed him as one of 11 department heads. He started as the head of the Department of Physical Training as Director for men. He led the track team to the championship in the mile relay at Penn’s Relay Carnival and the team won the Intercity College Championship. During his time at Drexel, Ryder served as the treasurer of the Drexel Institute Athletic Association, a facilities administrator, a faculty advisor, the librarian and started the Fencing Club. He passed away in 1931 after nearly 40 years of service to the University.
