Joel Gotchel was the Outstanding Senior Athlete in 1964 and earned six varsity letters at Drexel. He wrestled and played football for three seasons. Gotchel was a First Team All-East and All-MAC as a senior in football. In his final season of football, Gotchel was a co-captain and earned the Maxwell Award and the West Philadelphia Lions Club Award.
As a wrestler, he was on two undefeated teams in 1962-63 and 1963-64. Individually, he was the MAC heavyweight champion in 1963-64, 38-2 overall in his career, and was MAC runner-up as a junior. He won the F.C. Walton Award as the team MVP as senior and also served as the captain.
