Philadelphia – Drexel closed out its 2009 campaign with a 3-1 loss to William & Mary under the lights at Vidas Field. The Dragons went into the locker room tied 1-1 thanks to a goal by rookie Nathan Page. But after keeping the Tribe scoreless for a span of more than 70 minutes, Drexel allowed two goals in the final 13 minutes to drop its last match of the season. Seniors Cole Feffer, Mike Crosse, Greg Ermold, Alex Reber and Fabio Assumpcao were honored prior to the match as part of Senior Night proceedings. Drexel finishes its season at 5-12-1 overall and 1-9-1 in CAA play. The Tribe locks up a spot in next week's CAA playoffs with the win and finishes its regular season with a 13-4-1 record and a 8-2-1 mark in conference play.
The teams played nearly even in offensive attempts, with the Tribe holding a slight 20-19 advantage in shots. Drexel senior keeper Alex Reber played well in goal, making six saves and breaking up countless Tribe attacks in his last 90 minutes in net. Andrew McAdams made five stops in goal for William & Mary.
Price Thomas gave the Tribe a lead less than eight minutes into the match when Andrew Hoxie settled a ball at the top of the goal box and slid him a pass. Thomas dribbled the ball past a pair of defenders on the right side and punched a shot past Reber on the near side.
Page scored to tie the match in the 28th minute when he found space sprinting to the right side of the pitch about 10 yards outside of the goal box. The rookie took two touches then unleashed a screaming blast from his right foot that rippled the upper right corner of the net.
Minutes later Page would put another shot on goal, which was saved by McAdams in the middle of the frame. The Dragons went on to outshoot the Tribe 10-8 in the half.
The teams played to a draw through the next 49 minutes until the Tribe broke through thanks to some fortuitous positioning by Nathaniel Baako, who cleaned up a rebound off a header by Roger Bothe in the 78th minute.
Andrew Hoxie gave his team some insurance seven minutes later on a penalty kick earned after a Tribe player was taken down in the goal box. The conversion bolstered Hoxie's CAA-leading total and put the Tribe on top 3-1.
