The Drexel men's basketball team looks for its third straight win tonight at Cal State Northridge. The Dragons (5-5) and the Matadors (4-5) tip off at 10 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
Drexel has won two in a row and five of its last seven games after defeating St. Francis (Pa.) on Sunday, 57-35. The Dragons held the Red Flash to just nine points in the first half, the lowest amount a Drexel team has ever given up in a half. Samme Givens scored the first nine points of the game and went on to finish with career-highs of 24 points and 16 rebounds. The sophomore was 9-for-11 from the floor and was named the CAA Co-Player of the Week.
Junior Jamie Harris leads the Dragons with 14.2 points per game. He averages 3.4 assists per contest and had a team-high 17 steals. Gerald Colds, Givens, and Derrick Thomas all average more than eight points per game. Givens is tops on the club with 7.5 rebounds per contest. Chris Fouch is the team's top long-range threat. The redshirt freshman is shooting 34 percent from behind the stripe and has 16 three-pointers.
The Dragons are holding opponents to just 38 percent shooting from the floor and less than 30 percent from long distance. The Dragons have forced more than 14 turnovers per game on average through their first 10 contests. As a team, Drexel is shooting just under 40 percent.
Cal State Northridge begins play tonight with a 4-5 overall record. The Matadors have been off since Dec. 8, when they lost at Denver, 89-82. Denver shot nearly 60 percent from the floor and was 10-for-19 from long range. Willie Galick led the Matadors with 20 points. Lenny Daniel added a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. The Matadors are a high-scoring team, averaging just under 77 points per game. Kenny Daniles leads the team in scoring (16.7) and is shooting 79 percent from the line. Galick chips in with 11 points per game, while Daniel is third on the team in scoring and leads the team with 7.3 rebounds per game.
Cal State Northridge has a number of players capable of making a three-pointer, including Vinnie McGhee. McGhee has come off the bench in all but one game and is shooting 52 percent from deep. The Matadors are 2-0 at home this season, with wins against Cal State Bakersfield and Idaho.
