Philadelphia - The Drexel women's varsity eight defeated all Philadelphia entrants at the Bergen Cup Regatta to claim the Kelly Cup in what is considered the city championship. The victory bolstered what has already been a strong spring season for the boat as the varsity eight has already posted top three finishes at the Murphy Cup Regatta and the Knecht Cup Regatta. In addition to the varsity eight victory, the varsity four boat claimed first place while the novice eight boat finished second. The Bergen Cup Regatta was the final event before the season culminates at the Dad Vail Regatta.
The Dragons Kelly Cup winning time of 6:53.6 was nearly six seconds faster than second place Saint Joseph's who finished at 6:59.3. The Hawks top boat had won the Atlantic 10 Championship the week before and had only lost to Bucknell and Columbia all season before the Dragons triumph. Temple finished in third place, nearly 14 second behind Drexel at 7:07.3.
The Drexel varsity four had an even more commanding victory as they defeated second-place Philadelphia University by 9.5 seconds. Drexel crossed the line at 8:07.6 with third-place Temple registering a time of 8:22.1. The novice eight's second-place finish came after the Dragons clocked a 7:24.9, just four seconds behind Temple. Drexel finished ahead of third-place Saint Joseph's by 10 full seconds and La Salle by more than 31 seconds.
