Box Score
Williamsburg, Va. – Shannon Givens' three-pointer at the buzzer bounced off the rim as William & Mary hung on to defeat Drexel, 54-51, at William & Mary Hall. The game was originally scheduled to be played on Saturday, but was postponed due to the snow storm that blanketed the Hampton Roads region.
Drexel's defense held William & Mary (15-6, 7-4) to just 26 percent shooting in the contest, but the Tribe converted 28 of its 37 free throw attempts in the game. The Dragons (12-11, 7-4), who had their three-game winning streak snapped, had their chances, but struggled from the line. Drexel was 9-for-22 from the stripe in the game.
The Tribe led by as many as 11 in the second half after a Steven Hess jump shot made it 36-25 with 15:50 to play. The Dragons then buckled down on the defensive end and went on a 14-0 run. Drexel held the Tribe without a point for more than seven minutes and took the lead on a Jamie Harris lay-in at the 10:52 mark. William & Mary answered and went ahead just a few minutes later and won the game down the stretch at the line. The Tribe did not make a field goal in the final 6:21, but capitalized on Drexel fouls and went 11-for-12 in the final five minutes from the line.
William & Mary closed the first half with an 8-3 run, capped by a backdoor cut by Quinn McDowell for a lay-up which gave the Tribe a 28-21 lead. The Dragons held the Tribe to just seven field goals in the first half, but committed 14 fouls. William & Mary took advantage of the opportunity by sinking 13 of its 18 free throws in the half. On the other end, Drexel converted only four of its 11 attempts from the charity stripe.
Jamie Harris led the Dragons with 13 points. Chris Fouch and Samme Givens, who scored the Dragons first nine points of the game, finished the game with 11 points each. Givens also had seven rebounds, but fouled out after playing just 15 minutes. Evan Neisler led the team with nine boards.
David Schneider led the Tribe with 13 points and eight rebounds. The senior, who is one of the top scorers in the CAA, was limited to just one field goal in eight attempts, but made 11 free throws.
Drexel returns home to face Towson on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The game will be played in the Daskalakis Athletic Center and can be seen live on The Comcast Network.
