Philadelphia - Chris Fouch and Derrick Thomas combined for 49 points as Drexel defeated Penn at the Palestra, 77-56. It was the fourth straight win against the Quakers for the Dragons, who improved to 2-0 on the season.
Drexel opened the second half with an 11-0 run to increase its lead to 16 points. Thomas nailed a three-pointer with 14:34 to play to put the Dragons up 49-33. Penn (1-2) never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way. Drexel's lead increased to as many as 21 points in the closing minutes before Bruiser Flint emptied his bench. The Dragons shot 69 percent in the final 20 minutes.
Penn opened the game shooting 69 percent in the early going as the Quakers took a 16-10 lead. However, Drexel's defense tightened and the Dragons dominated the boards. Penn shot just 27 percent in the second half and Drexel outrebounded, 42-19. Dartaye Ruffin had a big game off the bench for Drexel, picking up his first career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Fouch had 16 of his game-high 26 points in the first half. The sophomore knocked down three treys in the opening 20 minutes. Thomas, also a sophomore, tied his career-high with 23 points. Thomas was 9-for-14 from the floor and perfect from long range with three three-pointers.
Drexel finished the contest shooting a season-best 56 percent. The bench outscored the Quakers, 40-12, led by Fouch's 26 points. Jack Eggleston led Penn with 15 points. It was the third straight time Drexel defeated Penn at the Palestra.
