Philadelphia – Lew Meehl, Drexel's former men's soccer head coach, was honored during half time of the Philadelphia Union home opener on April 10. Meehl, who served 17 seasons at the helm of Drexel men's soccer, took the pitch at Lincoln Financial Field late Saturday evening as Philadelphia's newest professional soccer team paid homage to those who played before them. Meehl, who played for the Philadelphia Atoms from 1973-1974, and 24 others were showered in applause as more than 34,000 fans came to their feet in appreciation. Hall-of-famers from Philadelphia's three professional soccer teams of the past, The Fury, The Spartans and The Atoms, were present for the accolades.
Meehl, a local Philadelphian, played collegiate soccer at Temple University where he was a First Team All-America selection in 1967 and inducted into the Temple Owls Hall of Fame in 1986. During his tenure playing professional soccer, Meehl occupied the midfield as part of the 1973 Atoms team that captured the North American Soccer League Championship.
After a decade of playing professionally, Meehl turned to coaching. He was named Drexel men's soccer head coach in 1993 and guided the Dragons to a North Atlantic Conference regular-season championship in 1995, an American East Championship in 1998 and a share of the CAA regular-season title in 2007.
“We were elated to bring back those who played before us to pay homage,” said Carl Cherkin, V.P. of Business Relations for the Union. “It's great that he (Meehl) wants to stay close to the game; his passion is incredible.”
