Box Score
Philadelphia, Pa. – Samme Givens scored 16 points and had 14 rebounds to lead Drexel past Georgia State, 57-33. The 33 points were the lowest amount of points a Drexel team has ever given up to another Division I opponent.
Givens scored 10 of his 16 points in the second half as the Dragons (13-6, 5-4 CAA) shot a blistering 61 percent in the final 20 minutes. He finished 7-for-11 from the floor as he picked up his seventh double-double of the season. Gerald Colds added 15 points, 12 of which came in the second half. He was 5-for-6 from the floor after making only one of seven shots in the first half. Fratz Massenat was also in double figures with 10 points. The freshman also handed out four assists without committing a turnover.
Both teams struggled in the first half on the offensive end. Drexel led 18-13 at intermission despite making only seven shots. Georgia State (8-11, 3-6) shot just 23 percent in the half and committed nine turnovers. After giving up a basket in the early going, the Drexel defense held the Panthers without a field goal for a stretch for almost 13 minutes, but could only open up a nine-point lead during that time.
The last time Drexel gave up 33 points was during the 1978-79 season opener against Widener. It was the least amount of points Drexel had given up since joining the ranks of Division I in 1973. Georgia State shot just 29 percent in the game. Eric Buckner and Marques Johnson each finished with eight points. The Dragons dominated the glass, outrebounding the Panthers, 41-25.
Drexel is back on the road for a pair of critical CAA games this week. The Dragons visit James Madison on Wednesday night and travel to Hofstra, who is tied for the CAA lead, on Saturday.
