Drexel Crew Wins Overall Point Title at Head of the Schuylkill Regatta for Second Straight Year

Philadelphia – Despite the wintery weather conditions, Drexel Crew was able to maintain speed and poise on the choppy waters of the Schuylkill at the 2011 Head of the Schuylkill Regatta. The Dragons earned one first place and three second place finishes on the day. Due to severe weather, the varsity eight events scheduled for Saturday afternoon were canceled. Drexel finished strong and claimed the over-all team title for the second straight year. The Dragons also won the men's and women's point trophy. The men's team also won in 2010.
The women's second varsity eight finished first with at time of 14:35.72 over 16 crews. The Marlene Buckley boat included coxswain Kerry Walsh, stroke Juliana DeMarici, Emily Coyle, Julia Jackson, Megan Bush, Mollie Cusack, Samantha Cowan, Alyssa Leahy, and bow Asiya Mahmud . Hamilton College clocked in at 15:01.69 for second place followed by the College of the Holy Cross. Drexel's second shell finished 10th overall.
The women's freshmen eight took second out of 28 crews with a time of 15:00.73. The University of Pennsylvania posted a top-time of 14:49.23. Bucknell and Old Dominion crossed the finish line after the Dragons. The John A. Daskalakis boat featured coxswain Catherine Hamilton, stroke Olivia Babiec, Emily Gartland, Meredith Bracken, Sierra Baca, Natalie Moriera, Emma Howard, Amanda Kleuser, and bow Bridget Pfiefer.
The men's freshmen eight, in the Peggy Greenawalt boat, captured second place with a time of 12:47.51 out of 40 crews. Princeton took first with a time of 12:22.10. The boat included Victoria Kenion, stroke Dean Hill, Brian McCabe, Marko Durica, Cameron Staines, Philip Byers, Casimir Czworkowski, Grigorios Papadourakis, and bow Christian Ladd. Drexel's second freshmen eight boat also placed 15th overall.
The men's second varsity eight took second place in a tightly contested race against the University of Virginia. Virginia posted a top time of 13:01.74 followed by the Dragons at 13:02.33. Marc Smith coxed the Vince Vidas boat with stroke Timothy Drake, Pete Eyrich, Brent Basso, Will Masters, Aleksandar Radovic, Nick Buyse, Kevin Rorabaugh, and bow Pat McGann ahead of 29 opposing crews.
The Dragons will compete in the Frostbite Regatta set for Saturday, November 12 on the familiar Schuylkill River.
